The 49th Battalion, Oakland Military Institute was awarded First Place for the Unit Community Service Award at a Pass in Review ceremony held at OMI on 20 May 2009. COL David B. Werner, Executive Officer of the California Cadet Corps, presented the award to C/1LT Miguel Hernandez, Battalion Commander, as part of the annual Memorial Day Pass in Review ceremony at OMI.  The cadets at OMI completed more than 8,000 hours of community service during the 2008-2009 school year to garner these top honors.  In his remarks at the Pass in Review Ceremony, COL Werner told the cadets, "You can be justifiably proud of your accomplishments.  You completed more community service than any other school in the California Cadet Corps.  We are proud of the work you have done and we thank you for representing the Corps so well."

Survival Red Berets and Flashes
Written by LTC (CA) Mark P. Ryan, Ph.D.
Wednesday, 15 April 2009
A number of individuals have inquired about red berets and the flashes for those berets.  State policy is that all survival training experiences for which the red beret is a desired award must first have approval (sanctioning) of HQ,CACC.  Units interested in conducting a "red beret" level survival program must first secure authorization to award the red beret.  Such authorization (sanctioning) is based on the provisions of the Cadet Regulation governing Survival, CR 3-5.  The point of contact for initial requests for state sanctioning of a "red beret" level survival program is the Assistant Executive Officer, LTC (CA) Ryan.  LTC (CA) Ryan will evaluate the submitted training plan and forward his recommendation to COL (CACC) Werner, who will make the final decision and communicate the decision to the requesting unit.  It is recommended that units submit such plans at least 90 days prior to the event to allow sufficient time to dialog with the HQ,CACC regarding standards, risk management, and operational details prior to the conduct of the event.  POC is LTC( (CA) Ryan at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
